Born in Holland and raised in Paris, Freddy Wittop began his career as a costume designer at the age of eleven, apprenticing for the Brussels Opera and becoming second in command of the costume department by the age of sixteen. He soon moved back to Paris and became a designer for the Folies Bergere. After the outbreak of WWII, Wittop moved to the U.S., served four years in the U.S. Army, and subsequently toured with his own company for eight years, both as a dancer and costume designer. He then began his career on Broadway, designing costumes for more than 75 productions, including "Holiday on Ice," "Subways are for Sleeping," "Carnival" and "Hello Dolly", for which he won a Tony Award. After a career as one of the most admired costume designers in American theatrical history, Wittop retired to Florida in the '80s, donating most of his original designs to the University of Georgia.
