The artist was born in Chicago and has been a resident of Seattle for over 40 years. Every year since 1958, he has lived part of the year in seclusion in remote areas of Japan where he studies, meditates, and produces all of his paintings and prints. In 1967 he was ordained a Zen Buddhist priest at the Zuisenji Temple, Kamakura, Japan by Roshi Oshita Toyomichi who gave him his Zen name, Daiensai Kuden Bon Seki Dojin. All of his works are signed in his western and eastern names.
